Catalogue note:
The replacement mantel for the State Dining Room in this scale drawing by architect Edwin B. Olson measures 7' 10". It is a reduced version of the original 1902/03 Bison-head mantel commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt from the architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. The size of the fireplace and chimney flue was changed during the complete 1950-1951 White House renovation requiring a scaled down version of the replacement mantel and a more elaborate paneled surround.

  • Condition: There is slight light damage.
    The work is hinged at the top.
    There is an old tape stain at top center.
    There is old glue stain right verso of the work.
    There is a hairline cut in the center on the edge.
