History of Fireplace drawings: / White House State Dining Room / Done by Ed. Olson of firm marked on back of drawing which is descendent firm of McKim, Meade, and White which remodeled W.H. for Theodore Roosevelt. Mantle of which this is a copy, was put in W.H. then and subsequently removed to Independence to Truman Library. Since flues in fireplace changed and made larger mantel had to be changed. These drawings are the renderings for the new mantel which is except for size a copy of TR mantle.

Catalogue note:
The replacement mantel for the State Dining Room in this scale drawing by architect Edwin B. Olson measures 8' 10", the same size as the original 1902/03 Bison-head mantel commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt from the architectural firm McKim, Mead and White. The previous lot (Lot 5027) is a scaled-down version of the replacement mantel, measuring 7' 10" with a more complex panel surround, reflecting a change in the size of the fireplace and chimney flue.
