Catalogue note: Jean Buhot, studied under his father, the artist Félix Buhot, and became known for his paintings of landscapes and interiors, as well as a lithographer and illustrator. He exhibited in Paris at the Salons des Artistes Indépendants from 1911, the Salon d'Automne from 1920, and the Salon des Tuileries from 1925. As a child prodigy, he was painted at age six by Norbert Goeneutte—a portrait now held in the Musée Poulain in Vernon, France. Deeply interested in Asian art and culture, Buhot illustrated a volume of Japanese Noh plays and the works of the Tibetan Buddhist bodhisattva-poet Milarepa, later writing extensively on Chinese and Japanese art and earning recognition as a leading French authority on Asian art (Source: Fletcher/Copenhaver Fine Art).
