Description:

MAURICE DELCOURT
FRENCH, 1877-1916
LE CAPITAINE BURLE
Charcoal drawing on wove paper
Lower right signed: M. Delcourt / (Le capitaine Burle)

Catalog note:
Delcourt was known for his genre scenes and still lifes, and also worked as a journalist, illustrator, and printmaker. He illustrated numerous books, including En suivant la Seine by G. Coquiot, Ballades by P. Fort, and Les Camelots de la Pensée by J. de Tinan. According to the inscription, this drawing was likely created as an illustration for an edition of Émile Zola's Le Capitaine Burle. Delcourt is perhaps best remembered for his printmaking; in 1903 he collaborated with Raoul Dufy on printmaking techniques, drawing inspiration from Japanese ukiyo-e woodcuts. He served as a second-lieutenant in the French Army during World War I, was awarded the Croix de Guerre for bravery, and was killed in action at Chatancourt in the Marne on December 29, 1916. His work is held in several private and public collections, including the Spencer Museum of Art in Kansas City.
