each surmounted by a broken pediment, the cartouche formed divided plate within a conforming molded surround, one decorated with chinoiserie figures, pagodas flowers, birds and butterflies; the other with exotic birds, fish and figures (2)

  • Provenance:
    Sold by the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley to benefit acquisition and conservation funds. Estate of Julian Wood Glass, Jr. (1910-1992) of Winchester, Virginia; New York, New York; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
  • Dimensions: 84 x 32 1/2 in. (213.36 x 82.55 cm.)
  • Condition: Losses to gesso, lacquer decoration is beginning to flake in multiple areas and losses are already present, particularly to the human and animal figures, originality of lacquer work in question, if not date of entire object, appears to be closer to 19th Century example of lacquer work that would not be consistent with the early 18th Century style period of frames, glass is close to leeching, if not already starting at some places (particlarly at edges)
