Catalogue note:
According to his son John Manship in his book, "Paul Manship," Abbeyville Press, New York, 1989, Robert Moses recommended Manship to create two sets of gates for Central Park in New York City. "First were the Osborn gates... and then in the late 1950s, a monumental gate for the Children's Zoo that Governor Lehman was donating to Central Park" (see p. 181 for photograph of entrance gates circa 1961). While the present gilt-bronze figures are not identical to ones atop the entrance gates (see the position of the dancing boy's arms, the swag of the drapery around his waist, the foliage at the base), they are typical of Manship's later work in the 1950s until his death in the mid-1960s. A number of similar small gilt-bronze figures were given as a bequest of his Estate to the Smithsonian and the Minnesota Museum of Art, Saint Paul. A plaster cast of a dancing boy with goats is illustrated on page 182. According to John Manship, the boy was "posed by the artist's grandson Erik Natti."
