Description:

PAUL-PIERRE LEMAGNY
FRENCH, 1905-1997
L'ARCHER DE STYMPHALE (HERCULES AND THE STYMPHALIAN BIRDS)
India ink and India ink wash drawing on heavy wove paper with irregular edges.
lower right margin signed in graphite: "Lemagny"?
Inscriptions in pencil in the left margin identify this drawing as having been done by Lemagny as an illustration for a poem by the great Cuban-born poet José-Maria de Heredia (1842-1905).

Catalogue note: Paul-Pierre Lemagny trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he earned numerous prizes and later returned as a professor known for balancing strong technical teaching with encouragement of independent style. Renowned as an engraver, he exhibited widely at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon des Tuileries, and was commissioned to design fifty-two postage stamps for the French government, personally engraving the George Sand stamp issued in 1957. This drawing, made to illustrate a poem by Heredia, depicts Hercules' sixth labor: driving away the Stymphalian birds with bronze noisemakers given by Athena. The dynamic image likely reflects Lemagny's familiarity with Bourdelle's celebrated Hercules the Archer bronze, which still stands in front of the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
