REGENCY BRONZED METAL MANTEL CLOCK, EARLY 19TH CENTURY, POSSIBLY IRISH/SCOTTISH
the tapering rectangular case with sphinx finial fitted with a circular dial with Roman numerals applied at the angles with sarcophagus and sphinx on scrolling anthemion feet

    Sold by the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley to benefit acquisition and conservation funds. Estate of Julian Wood Glass, Jr. (1910-1992) of Winchester, Virginia; New York, New York; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
  • Dimensions: Height: 24 3/4 in. (62.87 cm.)
  • Condition: Dial is a late 19th/early 20th Century replacement, movement also has had parts replaced and/or additional ones added for stabilization, crouching sphinx finial at top of clock is possibly a replacement as are the seated sphinxes at the base, replaced wood holding in the grilles on either side of the clock suggest that the grilles are not original and are in fact later replacements, some losses to finish as well as scratches throughout the surface, veneer cracked across the horizontal plane in several parts of the face, glass bezel of block is loose at hinge and hinge is patched
