SOVIET PORCELAIN FIGURE OF THE POET ANNA AKHMATOVA Russia, mid-to-late 20th Century, black painted hammer, sickle and cog mark, after a model by Natalya and Elena Danko of 1924, painted in blue with the spurious date 1923, the elegant tall standing figure modeled in the Art Deco style, wearing a black cap, orange and black pattern shawl draped over one shoulder and a loosely fitted grey dress, the cylindrical base painted with a single rose, h: 8.5 in.



Provenance: Estate of Ronald Sperling

Literature: Anna Akhmatova (1889-1966) was one of the most significant Russian poets of the 20th Century. She conveyed the image of a modern and progressive but elegant woman. The sisters Danko are said to have modeled and designed this figure from life.
