AMERICAN, CIRCA 1840
PORTRAIT OF A SEATED GENTLEMAN HOLDING A WOODEN FLUTE, CIRCA 1840
Oil on canvas
Catalogue note:
Robert Peckham (1785-1877) was a deacon in the Congregational church, a promoter of temperance, an abolitionist, and an artist. His painting career began in 1809, when he took lessons from the Boston artist Ethan Allen Greenwood. Later that year, Peckham painted his first portrait. By the 1830s and 1840s, he was producing brilliantly colored portraits of children in detailed domestic surroundings contrasting with darker paintings of adults he produced before and after that period. As with most folk artists very few of his paintings are signed.
