TWO JAMES NEALE CREAMWARE 'PORPHYRY' TWO-HANDLED VASES, CIRCA 1778-1780
impressed I. NEALE HANLY (sic) wafer and Neale & Co. marks, after the Antique, each graduated example of shield shape mottled in shades of green and black to simulate Serpentine stone, flanked by parcel-gilt enriched upright eagle head handles suspending husk swags, the conforming neck and socle with stiff leaf-tips, the larger vase with a portrait medallion pendant from a simulated rivet on one side containing the head of the architect, Inigo Jones; the smaller vase similar with a medallion of Hercules and the Nemean Lion, the replacement black basalt bases, impressed Wedgwood (2)

    Compare, Diana Edwards, "Neale Pottery and Porcelain", (1987), pl. 115. Note the medallion of Hercules and the Nemean Lion is based on a prototype originally in Lorenzo de' Medici's collection of gemstones most of which are now held in Museo Archeologico in Naples.
