TWO JAMES NEALE NEOCLASSICAL POLISHED BLACK BASALT VASES, CIRCA 1778-1780
the first with an impressed I. NEALE HANLY (sic) wafer mark, the shield-shaped vase flanked by Cleopatra mask handle suspending husk swags, the neck and base with acanthus leaf borders, a portrait medallion pendant from a simulated rivet on one side contains the head of Aesculapius, the other side a rosette, on a square polished base; the oviform vase flanked by female head handles suspending a husk swag, the side applied with a portrait medallion of a bearded man and a variant rosette on the other side (2)

  • Condition: Larger vase: minor rim nibbles to lower edge square base, minor wear
    Smaller vase: base detached and re-glued, repair to foot; both missing covers
