WEDGWOOD & BENTLEY LIGHT-BLUE SOLID JASPERWARE OVAL PORTRAIT MEDALLION OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790) circa 1779, impressed Wedgwood & Bentley, darker blue dipped ground, applied in white relief with a profile portrait, to sinister, titled 'FRANKLIN' below, h: 2 1/8 in.

Keen followers of scientific developments, both Wedgwood and Franklin were members of the Lunar Society founded in 1765. As practical as a Franklin maxim, Society meetings were held when the moon was full, thus ensuring enough light to travel home safely after dark.
