WEDGWOOD & BENTLEY LIGHT-BLUE SOLID JASPERWARE OVAL PORTRAIT MEDALLION OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (1706-1790) circa 1775, impressed Wedgwood & Bentley, after a wax portrait by Patience Wright, applied in white relief with a half-length profile portrait, to sinister, in full wig, waistcoat and Colonial frock coat, titled below 'FRANKLIN', h: 4 in.

Catalogue Note:
For the Patience Wright wax portrait, see Eliza Meteyard, 'The Life of Josiah Wedgwood', Vol. II, p. 7; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession no. 50.187.72. Wright is known to have corresponded with Franklin throughout the Revolutionary War, letters included reports on the health of his illegitimate son, William, and recorded her activity as an advocate on behalf of prisoners of war held in England.
