WEDGWOOD 'GLAZED-CARRARA' PATE-SUR-PATE COBALT-BLUE AND BUFF-IVORY GROUND TWO-HANDLED PILGRIM FLASK circa 1878, impressed uppercase mark and O, the decoration attributed to Frederick Rhead, of flattened circular form with turquoise scroll handles at the shoulder, centering a dark cobalt-blue panel, painted and hand-tooled in white slip with fish among blue waves, set among pond fronds, the reverse gilt with a spray of bamboo, the oval foot enriched with a band of stylized triangular leaves and key pattern, h: 7 1/8 in.

Frederick Alfred Rhead (1856-1933) was employed at the Wedgwood manufactory circa 1878-1883. Prior to joining the firm, he had trained under Louis Solon at Minton until his dismissal in December 1877. His pate-sur-pate work was selected by Wedgwood for the Paris Exposition Universelle in1878. The Wedgwood Museum Digital Archive, reference no.s EVASE36-40, also records a number of vases from this time period that were described as having been collaboratively designed by 'Frederick Rhead and Charles Toft'.
