WEDGWOOD LIGHT-BLUE SOLID JASPER RECTANGULAR PLAQUE, ‘RAISING AN ALTAR TO BACCHUS’ circa 1878, impressed uppercase mark, adapted from a design by Alphonse Lechevrel (1848-1924), applied in relief with two Bacchantes and a Satyr raising a herm to Priapus, h: 9 x w: 12 1/2 in., within an ebonized wood frame, h:10 1/4 x w: 13 3/4 in.

Catalogue Notes:
Alphonse Lechevrel is recorded as a French engraver, cameo glass artist employed at Wordsley Flint Glass Works, near Stourbridge, and a silver medalist. The present subject appears on a cameo-cut glass vase by Lechevrel between 1877-1879, and was a gift to his employer when he left the Wordsley Works.
