WEDGWOOD SAGE-GREEN DIP JASPERWARE MEDALLION OF NELSON (1758-1805) AND A BLUE DIP MEDALLION OF WELLINGTON (1769-1852) early 19th Century, impressed uppercase marks, the first, after a wax model by John de Vaere of 1798, applied in white relief with a half-length portrait of Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, later 1st Duke of Bronte (Sicily), depicted to sinister in military uniform with the star and sash of the a Knight of Bath, h: 4 1/2 in; the second, modeled by John Henning in 1813, applied in white relief with a profile of Arthur Wellesley, The Duke of Wellington, to dexter, h: 3 in. Catalogue Note:
The portrait illustrates Rear Admiral Nelson after the loss of his right arm (1797). John de Vaere's red wax models included a set of four portraits of naval heroes, comprising Admirals Nelson, Duncan, Howe and St Vincent. The well-known soldier, statesman and Prime Minister Arthur Wellesley became first Earl of Wellington in 1813 and Duke of Wellington in 1814, after victory on the Iberian Peninsula, prior to the defeat of Napoleon at Waterloo on the 18th of June 1815.
