Catalogue Note:
As early as 1740, people in England were aware of valuable deposits of white clay in the Cherokee region of the North Carolina mountains. By April of 1768, Thomas Griffith, as agent, completed his first delivery to Josiah Wedgwood. This highly prized supply of white 'Cherokee' clay was said to have lasted fifteen years. Documentary examples are rare.
