Description:

ENGLISH EARTHENWARE TRANSFER-PRINTED MOTTO MUG 18th Century, Staffordshire, cylindrical with engine-turned banding and grooved strap handle, printed in black with a verse framed above and below by a winged cherub and an eagle carrying an olive branch in its beak, inscribed ‘Jesus, my All, to heav'n is gone, He whom I fix my hopes upon, His track I see, and I'll pursue, The narrow way, till him I view.’, h: 4 3/4 in.

Provenance: Skinner, Boston, 12 January 2008, sale 2394, lot 69 (as salt-glazed stoneware) and again on 12 January 2013, sale 2631B, lot 21 (as creamware).
Jeffrey Milkins Collection, no. 693.

Catalogue Note:
The lyric on the present mug is taken from a hymn, ‘The Way to Canaan’, by John Cennick, (Reading, Berkshire, England 1717-1755 Chelsea London), a Methodist preacher associated with Wesley and Whitefield, who then toured Germany with the Moravians, and is later recorded ministering in Dublin and in the north of Ireland and is buried in a Moravian cemetery in Chelsea, London.

There is some question as to whether the body material may be a very refined stoneware rather than creamware. Note the glaze has been tested and is consistent with creamware production.
