Description:

TWO BRITISH SALTGLAZE STONEWARE CARICATURE JUGS AND TWO GRADUATED DOULTON LAMBETH STONEWARE 'OLD SARUM KETTLES' both two-tone brown caricature jugs, early 19th Century; the first, a satire of 'The Duke of Wellington', modeled grimacing, with scroll handle, the spout as the brim of his hat, h: 7.5 in.; the second, model as a man's head, his tricorn hat brim forming the spout, h: 6 in.; the graduated two-tone brown saltglaze 'Old Sarum Kettles', circa 1898-1920, impressed uppercase marks, made exclusively for Watson & Co, Salisbury, Registration nos. 90505 and numbered 7285 and 3805, oviform with high loop handle, each applied at the shoulder with a spout and funnel, one with metal mount, h: 11 in. (the taller) (4)

Literature: See J.F. Blacker's, 'ABC of English Saltglazed Stoneware', for a similar man's head, this example tentatively attributed to Charles Bloodworth of Lambeth, p. 96.
The Old Sarum Kettle form is based on a red earthenware egg-shaped vessel in the Salisbury museum. The original, once thought to have been excavated in Sarum, is now believed to be an olive oil or wine pitcher from North Africa.
